Honor – Julie Mountz, 59, of Honor passed away unexpectedly January 9, 2018, near Cordes Junction, Arizona.
Julie was born on January 25, 1958, in Grosse Pointe to Henry and Jane (Pelkey) Meurer.
On April 7, 1984, Julie married Thomas Mountz in the All Faiths Chapel at the State Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan.
An MSU graduate, Julie began her elementary teaching career at St. Francis. She then taught for 28 years at Benzie County Central public schools, where she retired in 2013. Following her career as an educator, she began working at Grand Traverse Pie Company where she became a friendly and familiar face to many. Julie was a member of Michigan Education Association-Retired and the Democratic Party. She also served her community as an election official, a Platte Township Trustee, and as a member of the West Benzie Joint Planning Commission. She loved to hike, cross country ski, bike, host beach fires, and garden. She will be remembered for the love she had for her family, her passion for human rights and the environment, being politically engaged, and especially for teaching critical thinking skills to her students. Julie will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community.
Julie is survived by her husband Tom, daughter Maggie (Brian) Kegley; son Luke Mountz; granddaughter Ana Kegley; her mother Jane; siblings John Meurer, Molly Wagner, Michele Ganesch, and Henry Meurer.
Julie was preceded in death by her father Henry.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A time of sharing will begin at 3:30 pm.
Julie will be laid to rest at the Platte Township cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, it was Julie's wish that memorial contributions be made to the Women's Resource Center, The Father Fred Foundation, or the Salvation Army.
