Paul J. Schettek, 94, of Maple City passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born March 22, 1923 to John and Helen (Osie) Schettek in Maple City. He was the second youngest of 10. When Paul was young his father passed away, which forced him to assume many responsibilities of an older person. In his early years he worked on the family farm and at a local saw mill. Later he worked at Cluff Well Drilling and Concrete Service before retiring in 1985.
Paul married Beatrice 'Arlene' Fritz on June 1, 1957 and together they celebrated over 60 years of marriage. He and Arlene raised 5 children and were grandparents to 4 grandchildren. Paul enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood, ice fishing on Little Glen Lake, enjoying coffee and chewing the fat with his buddies at the local gas station. He also liked circling the neighborhood in his pick up truck, with Chet (the dog). He was fond of the family farm and didn't like being away for more than a day or so. Later, while living at the Pavilions he looked forward to 'BINGO' Tuesday.
He is survived by his wife Beatrice 'Arlene' (Fritz) Schettek; children Robert (Deborah) Schettek, Roger Schettek, Denise (Jim) Martin, Judy Schettek and James (Sherry) Schettek; sister Mary Ellen Novak; sister-in-law Irene Schettek; and grandchildren Stephanie, Eric, Kali and Tyler and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Helen (Ossie) Schettek; sisters Veronica Levenske, Lillian Peplinski, Josephine Lewis, Genevieve Peplinski and Tackla Schettek; brothers Alex, John, and Clarence Schettek.
The family would like to especially thank the loving staff at the Pavilions for his exceptional care and for the kindness.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St Rita Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
