Joseph S. Baker

They say only the good die young. Heaven sure needed a man with a humble spirit, integrity, humor and honesty. A fiercely devoted husband, dad, grandpa, uncle and friend, Joseph Samuel Baker passed into eternal life at the home he built with his bride of 41 years on August 26th 2021. Born to William R. and Faith J. (Port) Baker on June 24, 1957, in Bucyrus, Ohio, Joe, the second of five children, was quickly immersed into the role as man of the house, with his Dad's sudden passing when Joe was 12 years of age. Although young in years, Joe accepted this role with quiet dedication to his mother, knowing he had values clearly instilled in him from his parents and strong Catholic upbringing. “Catholic guilt can steer you in the right direction”, he would remark, believing that a greater power was always present and watching. Joe's Catholic education began at Holy Trinity where the nuns were fully in charge, guaranteeing his obedience with a stern look and strict discipline. With the understanding that a college education would be financially difficult for his Mom, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduation from Bucyrus High School in 1975. Recognized for his leadership, intelligence and skill, Joe was selected for assignment to Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland as a Security Police Officer for Presidential Duty where he achieved an early rank of Sergeant. His Top Secret security clearance with Presidential Access spoke to his integrity. He was a respected member of his squadron and formed a brotherhood that spanned over 46 years. Although very dedicated to service, Joe found time to kick back, strolling to the Skyline Tavern off base, then walking back to his barracks with his buddies as the sun rose. It was during his service that Joe met the love of his life, Rasa Evans, as she was gently persuaded to take police training in his squadron. Quickly, they found common banter debating which had the best football team, Ohio State or The University Of Michigan. Although Joe's blood was certainly Scarlet and Gray, his heart overrode his loyalty and a courtship of two months began a lifetime of love. Rasa and Joe were married on May 17th, 1980 and together raised three remarkable sons, Steven, Michael and Robert. Rasa in turn, became a die hard Buckeye fan, watching every game and challenging calls right along with her beloved husband. Joe's dedication to his children included being a scout leader, basketball, baseball and football coach. His style was patient as he nurtured kids to see the bigger picture; have fun, show up, work hard, be respectful, be a humble winner and a gracious loser. Joe helped cook and serve countless team meals and found ways to help kids in need. He never missed a game or an event. He was a member of the Jaycees, a dedicated board member of The Almira Township Veterans Committee and community volunteer. He made new friendships with the support of his East Side Group. Joe's treasured children looked to him for advice and always found a listening ear when troubled. He was deeply respected and loved. As a husband, Joe was Rasa's tireless and faithful supporter. He always had her back, never judging her when her overzealous spirit got her into a pickle or overwhelmed her heart. “We will figure this out, honey, don't worry.” Joe was the calm to Rasa’s storm, always. He loved his family and adored his grandchildren. Joe’s traditional annual deer camp at the family retreat near Lake Michigan, forever sacred. “What happens at deer camp, stays at deer camp.” Joe said this serene place in the woods recharged his spirit and nurtured his soul. He enjoyed a good cigar around the campfire or sitting on his deck no matter the season. Although Joe's health was filled with many challenges, he endured them all without complaint. He was always more concerned about others than himself. Joe was a dedicated AAA employee for over 35 years, handling difficult claims and always with respect, kindness and professionalism. He was retired for over six years and was able to enjoy spending time traveling with his bride including an out west adventure for a month with no real plans, just the truck, bikes, maps and an explorer's heart. It was truly one of the best memories he made traveling, reminding all of us to take the trip because life is short. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Rasa (Evans) Baker, sons Steven (Tiffany) Baker, Michael (fiancée Alesandra) and Robert (Corinne) Baker; grandchildren Alexis, Riley, Samuel, Jack, Kyle, Clare and Bennett; sisters Mary (Rick) Lanner, Theresa (Dennis) Marcell and Faith Baker; mother-in-law, Jurate (Ray) Moriartey, brothers-in-law Paul (Patsy) Evans, Mark (Pam) Evans, sisters-in-law Kimberly VanDahm, Melissa (Michael) Itsell, and countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, infant brother William, father-in-law Jack Evans and brother-in-law Fred VanDahm. Joe will be remembered for his keen sense of humor, always finding ways to lighten the mood but never at the expense of others. To honor his memory, in lieu of flowers, the family requests you find opportunities to help a child that may need new athletic shoes, help paying a sporting fee or for a treasured camp that might be a burden for their family. Share your best jokes and think of Joe with his wide grin, treasured Buckeye hat, good cigar and larger than life presence. Our love for you will live on with the wonderful memories we share.
