Traverse City - Paul William Schneider, 91, of Traverse City passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Paul was born on July 8, 1922 in Chelsea, Michigan to Oscar David and Mary (Lambert) Schneider.
Paul was a graduate of Chelsea High School and continued his education at Albion College where he earned a BS in economics. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and a varsity athlete in both football and basketball.
Paul was a retired veteran of WWII from the United States Navy. He served in the south pacific on a LST as a Lieutenant JG.
Paul married the love of his life, Mary Lou Larson, on July 16, 1949 in Petoskey. They made their home in Traverse City where they raised four children. His family was his pride and devotion. Many memories were created with their close neighbors on Boughey Hill. Paul was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. Paul sang in the Central United Methodist choir for 50 years and volunteered many years as the financial secretary. He shared many laughs in the Rotary Minstrel show with his friends, especially Jack Bensley.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou, children, Suzanne Marie (Steve) Lerner of Los Angeles, CA, Janeen Ann (Gregg) Lawley of McCall, ID, Marley Kay Niewendorp of East Jordan, Paul David (Shaun) Schneider of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Kendra (Doug) Watson of Portland, OR, Spencer (Rae) Lawley of Anchorage, AK, Emily Niewendorp (fiancé Danny Garcia) of Brooklyn NY, Joseph Niewendorp of Minneapolis, MN, Claire Niewendorp (fiancé Burket Kniveton) of Whitefish, MT, Kaitlynn Schneider of Arlington, VA and a great granddaughter, Ainsley Watson of Portland, OR. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Carl and sister Anne Flintoft.
The memorial service for Paul will begin at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 1 at Central United Methodist Church, where friends may greet the family beginning at 11 a.m. The Reverend Dale Ostema will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium of Central United Methodist Church.
Paul may be remembered through memorial contributions in his name to Central United Methodist Church or to the Salvation Army.
