Obituary

"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs 31:31

The Lord wholly healed and called Anne Therese (Alger) Shier, age 70, to her eternal home on August 24, 2022. Anne now rests with her Savior. After more than three years of living life to the fullest with cancer, her remaining days were spent at home in Traverse City, Michigan surrounded by her loved ones.

When Anne entered this world, she made it a brighter place. She was born on October 11, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan and was raised in Westland, Michigan by her late father, William Joseph Alger (2016) and her surviving mother, Rose "Virginia" (Majchrzak) Alger.

As a young woman, Anne was swept off her feet by her sweetheart, Fredrick Carl Shier (1945-2013); the two married on October 6, 1973 in Omena, Michigan. Fred and Anne's marriage was marked by their unwavering faith and playful friendship. Together they raised their eight surviving children.

Sons: Jason (Janie) Shier, David (Morgan) Shier, Aaron (Abigail) Shier, Jon (Janice) Shier, Frederick (Megan) Shier Jr., and Joseph Shier and daughters: Bethany Shier and Maryanne (Michael) Smith.

Anne embodied many of the Christ-like characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman: A wife of noble character, whose husband had full confidence in her and whose children arise and call her blessed.

She had an amazing gift for captivating others through her inquisitive nature, genuine and Spirited compassion, and sharing her childlike outlook and discoveries of the world around her.

She led an abundant life, unfolding surprises at every turn; be it a spontaneous trip, outing or a fun family gathering. She was full of wonder and often floated around wild-but-feasible ideas—everything with Anne was experienced as an adventure.

As a life-long learner she was fascinated with hands-on history, brought Bible stories to life and thoroughly enjoyed exploring new places with her chosen companions.

She loved tasting new foods, coming up with any small reason to celebrate, and refused to miss out on the many happenings of her huge family. Some of her final days were spent with her entire extended family in Curtis, Michigan for their 12th triennial Alger Family Reunion. There, she was able to do what she desired: visit, reminisce, indulge, worship, share love and be loved.

Her six surviving siblings, Jim (Ellen) Alger, Steve (Victoria) Alger, Mary (Kevin) Dolin, Patty Alger, Jeanne (Bob) McAllister, Clare (Robb) Blatt, were her confidants and a cherished constant throughout her life. Very few conversations were absent of her love, care and concern for each of them and their families. She was loved and treasured by them for her undivided interest in others, propensity to live in the moment and for her unshakable stewardship. Anne also remarkably nurtured personal relationships with her 16 surviving nieces and nephews, their loving spouses, and precious children.

She was a FUN Grandmother who was fully immersed in the lives of her 21 surviving grandchildren: Aidan, Madison, Kaleb, Nyah, Maxwell, Lincoln, Alexis, Raelynn, Jacob (Sadie), Logan, Anna, Evelyn, Audra, Alison, Kaitlin, Fred, Eleanor, Samuel, Noah, Emma and Frederick III. Her love for them was fierce; few things stood in the way of attending their extra-curricular activities, scheduling special outings and FaceTiming. She was attentive and intentional and celebrated their unique interests.

Anne's personal investment in people extended into the workplace during her 15 years with H&R Block. As a natural encourager and listener, Anne formed unique relationships with her coworkers. In return, these same coworkers were a source of love and strength to Anne.

One of her greatest, most admirable assets was her authentic prayer life. If she knew you, she prayed for you. Anne's love for the Lord was evident in the family she raised, the home and company she kept, the hope she held and all the hearts forever touched through the sharing of her radiant faith.

The Shier family will receive visitors at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg on Friday, September 2, 2022 at 12:00 P.M., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Craig Trierweiler will officiate.

Cremation has taken place.
