Cathleen E. Stone

Cathleen E. Stone of Cheboygan, Michigan passed away in Traverse City on August 26, 2022. Cathy was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI to Robert A. and Ellen R. (Hannon) Stone on April 3, 1950. She attended Immaculate Conception Elementary and graduated from Traverse City St. Francis High School with the class of 1968. Cathy earned an Associate of Arts from Northwestern Michigan College, a B.A. in Special Education from Western Michigan University and a Masters in School Administration from Central Michigan University. She began her career as a teacher of Special Education at Inverness Elementary School at Cheboygan Area Schools. Cathy later became the principal and Special Education supervisor at Inland Lakes Elementary School. Later in Cheboygan, she was principal at East Elementary School and West Elementary School as well as Special Education Director. Cathy retired from the career she loved in 2010, after 38 years of service. Cathy was dedicated in her service to students, teachers and community members. She was especially involved in organizations supporting children and adults with special needs. Cathy acted as Director of Area 33 Special Olympics in Northern Michigan, volunteered with the State of Michigan Special Olympics and was selected to be a Michigan coach for the Summer Special Olympics World Games in 1995. Her volunteerism with special adults led her to two nominations in Who’s Who in America. Cathy was selected as Michigan’s Teacher of the Year in 1985 by The Arc. Cathy was a member and past president of the Gamma Eta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an organization for professional women in education. She was also a member and past president of Kiwanis International in Cheboygan. She served as a board member and treasurer of Lamplighters. In Cheboygan, Cathy was a long-time member of St.Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church where she was an usher and eucharistic minister. In addition to volunteer work, Cathy loved to read, travel, golf and garden. Cathy’s kindness and humor will be missed by her family, many friends and acquaintances. Surviving family are her sister, Alicia (Britt) Sanford of Traverse City; brother, Robert (Susan) Stone of Interlochen: nieces, Angela (Neil) Jones, Erin (Aaron Singer) Sanford, and Katelyn (Zachary) Cox: nephews, Joshua Stone, Matthew Sanford, Raymond Stone and Zackery Stone; six great nieces and three great nephews and a great-great niece. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Stone. The family will hold a visitation at St.Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church on 120 North D Street, Cheboygan, Michigan on Thursday, September 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary/St Charles Church on 120 North D Street, Cheboygan on September 2 at 10:00 a.m., with visitation to begin at 9:00 a.m. Father Duane Wachowiak will be presiding at the Mass. Cathy is being cared for by both the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City and Nordman-Christian Funeral Home Cheboygan.
