Charlene (Charl) Ann Wolcott Gray, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024. She was born to Charlotte and George Wolcott on February 7th, 1941, in Orchard Park, NY. Charlene enjoyed a blessed childhood surrounded by a loving family and the simple joys of small-town America in the 1950s. Charl's life took a beautiful turn when she met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Gray, on a blind date while both were attending Syracuse University. Their connection was immediate and profound, with Dick famously telling his roommate that very night, "I found the girl I want to marry." Their love story spanned six decades, culminating in the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary in September. Professionally, Charl’s compassion and dedication shone through her role as a child welfare caseworker in Buffalo, NY, Chicago, IL, and Greensboro, NC, where she made a significant impact caring for young children. Her career also saw her excel as the top salesperson for C-McKee, a prominent women’s clothing line. Throughout Dick's career, Charlene was a dedicated partner and an invaluable asset in her husband's business endeavors. Her support and contributions were instrumental in their shared success and achievements. Her strength as a wife and mother was evident in her willingness, without hesitation, to guide her family through eleven relocations. She was always resourcefully uplifting and creative in bringing contentment and joy to her family, which is reflected in the success and character of every child and grandchild. Charlene was truly a blessing to all who knew her. Charl cherished her seven grandchildren deeply, as evidenced by her dedicated efforts to create personalized journals for each of them, meticulously chronicling their lives through words and photos from the age of 2 until they turned 21. These journals served as treasured keepsakes, reflecting Charl’s commitment to preserving memories and creating lasting bonds with her grandchildren. Charl, a self-taught Blue Ribbon quilter, gained recognition through notable accolades, including the highest prize for one of her show quilts at the Chester County Fair in Pennsylvania. This success inspired her to establish a quilting business, where she shared her expertise through extensive quilting “how-to” videos. Her quilts, meticulously crafted with thousands of tiny perfect hand stitches and adorned with her own unique patterns, showcased her creativity and dedication to her craft. In addition to quilting, Charl excelled in basket weaving, stenciling, and various other crafts, highlighting her passion for artistic expression and creativity. Charlene's life was marked by her love for adventure and activity. She was an active athlete, enjoying skiing, golf, tennis, sailing, waterskiing, and snowshoeing. She cherished world travel with her husband, creating lasting memories together. Notably, she became the Oakland Hills 9-hole champion in her first year, showcasing her talent and passion for sports. Charl and Dick cherished their evening ritual of sitting together on their dock at their beautiful Torch Lake home, reminiscing and planning with a glass of wine. These serene moments were a testament to their enduring love and shared appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Beyond her athletic pursuits, Charlene was deeply involved in her community. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, MI, where she served on the Nurture Mission committee and as a deacon, embodying her faith through service and compassion. Additionally, she contributed her time and efforts to organizations such as P.E.O. and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Charl is survived by her loving husband Dick, her three children and their families: Rich (Emily), Tim (Susie), Katie (Audley) and her grandchildren: Elly (Alex), Kylie (Joe), Erin (Dom), Connor (Hailey), Anna (Korey), Emma and Sutton. She is also survived by her great-grandchild Dominic, her sister Sabra and preceded in death by her brother Charles (Bud). Please join us in celebrating her life on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 3 to 7 pm at the Gardens at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 6th Street, Traverse City, MI 49648. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11 am with visitation beginning one hour prior at the First Rapids Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, 404 Spruce Street, Elk Rapids, MI 49629. A luncheon will follow at the church. A private family interment will take place at Milton Township Cemetery.
