David Patrick Ronan, 68, of Traverse City passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018. David was born on May 7, 1950 in Midland, MI to the late Russell and Helen (Kotenko) Ronan. He was both mentally and physically handicapped, being admitted to Lapeer State Mental Hospital at the age of five. Over the years he lived at Mount Pleasant State Home for children and adults, Newberry State Hospital, and Gaylord State Facility.
When these State facilities closed, David was moved back to Grand Traverse County, his home. He was under the placement and wonderful guidance of Community Mental Health of Traverse City. He lived for 10 years in the care home, Horizon Heights, shared with three other men. This secure home was staffed with gentle and loving caregivers, under the guidance of Kathy Wilgenhof, the owner.
David is survived by five siblings; Ruth (Richard) Graves of Prescott, AZ, Gail (David) Jodway of Suttons Bay, MI, Patrick (Lu) Ronan of Chicago, IL, Beverly (Gerald) Bacon of Wyoming, MI, and Kevin Ronan of Wyoming, MI.
Our family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, and those who met with family for guidance and support as their loving care was given freely and generously to our brother while at Munson Medical Center.
And finally, our deep appreciation to Medilodge of Leelanau, where David's bedside nurses comforted him so well. Also a heartfelt thank you to Julie of Hospice of Michigan, for her gentleness and vigilance.
A private family committal service has taken place. Mass Intension for David will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1025 S. Union St., Traverse City, MI 49864.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council #13958.
