In Loving Memory of Dennis Anthony Merrifield
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, Dennis Anthony Merrifield passed away peacefully on November 3, at home, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and faithful dog, Stella.
Born on September 5, 1940, to John and Elva Merrifield, Dennie lived a life that radiated laughter, kindness, and joy. His presence lit up every room, and his spirit left a permanent mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dennie married his sweetheart, Jeannie Boudreau, on September 10, 1960, and together they built a beautiful life on Duck Lake Peninsula, raising four children: Gina (Mike) Esch, John (Joanne) Merrifield, Diana (Terry) Longton, and Laura (Chris) Oblinger. Their home was a haven of warmth and adventure, filled with cherished traditions-it was a given that the Merrifield home was host to the Duck Lake Peninsula community every summer weekend. There were annual trips to Cedar Point, Thanksgiving pilgrimages to watch the Lions, and unforgettable journeys to Disney World and the Florida Keys with caravans of close family friends.
The memories they created—toupees lost on roller coasters, Thanksgiving dinners in the motorhome after the Bears beat the Lions, and campfires under the stars at Disney—are stories that will be told for generations, each one a testament to Dennie's love for life and family.
Dennie and Jeannie also shared a passion for hospitality, owning and operating the Karlin Inn in Karlin, MI for many years. Known for its legendary fish fries, the Karlin Inn became a beloved gathering place in the Traverse City area. Behind the bar, Dennie was more than a bartender—he was a confidant, a storyteller, and a source of joy for every patron who walked through the door.
After retiring from the restaurant business, Dennie found a second calling as a car salesman. His integrity, warmth, and genuine care turned customers into lifelong friends. Every car he sold came with a promise: you were being treated like family.
Following Jeannie's passing on January 28, 1994, Dennie was blessed to find love again with Sandy (Benzenberg) Morton. Their 30 years together were filled with laughter, companionship, and adventure. From boating at Harbor West Marina to hosting poker nights in the clubhouse, Dennie and Sandy created a vibrant life together. If you were invited to dinner, you knew to "bring your change"— because a game of poker was imminent! In the last year with Sandy's mother, Ethel, Dennie and Sandy spent a year giving her care while Ethel made certain Dennie always had his Highball.
Together, they traveled, cruised, and embraced retirement with joy, watching their 13 grandchildren – Corey Esch, Emily Esch, Brittany Merrifield, Chelsea Surdi (Merrifield), Kali Merrifield, Jeanie Richard (Longton), Andrea Boyden (Longton), Grace Oblinger, Lily Morton, Gaby Morton, Jack Morton, Samantha Brigham, and Marina Zehner - grow into remarkable individuals and welcoming four great-grandchildren-Emma, Ben and Molly Surdi and Lola Jo Boyden-into the world. Dennie came to respect and love Sandy's son, Joe, as if he was his own. Dennie adored his family and found immense pride in the legacy he helped build.
In his final years, Dennie was rarely seen without Sandy and their sweet dog Stella. Their peaceful life reflected the love, laughter, and deep connections that defined Dennie's journey.
He leaves this world a happily married man, a proud father and grandfather, and a soul filled with joy for all he accomplished. In his own words, "I didn't do so bad, did I, it's been a great run". He faced the end with courage and peace, surrounded by those he loved most, with no regrets and a heart full of gratitude.
A private ceremony will be held by the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Condolences may be shared at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com and notes of care can be sent to his beloved wife, Sandy Merrifield.
