Jack Enger

TRAVERSE CITY — Jack Henry Enger Sr., 81, lifelong resident of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Jack was born on March 25, 1929, to the late William Sr. and Louise (Egeler) Enger in Traverse City.Jack grew up in the area then answered the call of duty, serving his country as a member of the United States Army. Jack was stationed in Germany during World War II, serving with the Constabulary. Returning home to his roots Jack continued enjoying Northern Michigan, spending time on the water fishing, snowmobiling in the winter, and going for a ride on his motorcycle. Then on July 7, 1951, Jack entered into marriage with the former Shirley Ann Griffiths at East Bay Calvary Church in Traverse City. Jack and Shirley began their life together, and their family quickly grew with the addition of three boys and eventually many grandkids. Jack made his living as an ironworker, providing help on many large projects all over the area and the state. Jack was a longtime member of the ironworkers union and Immanuel Baptist Church. He could often be found sneaking off to be with nature, spending time fishing or hunting after the next big buck. Jack loved being with family, especially as a proud grandfather, supporting the grandkids at any activity or passing on the legacy left by his family of the great outdoors. Jack's larger than life personality will be missed by many fishing partners, hunting buddies, ironworkers, friends and family.Jack is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Shirley Enger, of Traverse City; two sons, Tom Enger and David (Deborah) Enger; daughter-in-law, Shelley Enger; grandchildren, Tenille, Nicole, Heather, Laurie, Eric, Adam, Nathan and Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Shane, Julia, Christian, Neva, Anna, Danny, Paige, Silas and Elexis; also David and Nathan Hinkle, who Jack always considered his adopted grandkids; his sister, Kay (Enger) Selkirk; his faithful companion, Peanut; as well as many other loving family members and friends.Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jack Enger Jr.; and his siblings, Edna, Earl, William Jr. and Gladys.Visitation for friends and family will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with the Rev. Matthew Herron and the Rev. Wayne Squires officiating.
