Muriel Schlorff Newman, 96, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, with her family by her side.
Muriel was born on May 4, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Helen and Fred Schlorff. She grew up alongside her brother, Robert "Bob" Schlorff, and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School with the Class of 1946. That same year, she enrolled at Albion College, where she met the love of her life, Bill Newman. Muriel was a proud sister and 1947 initiate of the Beta Pi chapter of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Bill and Muriel graduated together in June of 1950 and were married later that year on December 23.
After earning her degree, Muriel began her career teaching first grade, a role she held for two years before retiring to start a family. She and Bill welcomed three children: Margaret Helen "Peggy" Newman in 1952, William Frederick Newman in 1955, and Amy Jeanne Newman "Miss Surprise of 1965"
Muriel later earned her Master's Degree in Information Science in 1981 and went on to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, where she remained until her retirement in 1990. Following retirement, she and Bill enjoyed both national and international travel, exploring new places and making cherished memories together. One of Muriel's favorite pastimes was building and furnishing intricate dollhouses, a creative pursuit that reflected her patience and attention to detail.
For 63 years, Muriel and Bill were devoted members of First Congregational Church of Royal Oak, where they found faith, fellowship, and lifelong friendships. She was also a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. In November 2021, the couple relocated to Traverse City, where Muriel spent her final years surrounded by the compassionate staff at the Grand Traverse Pavilions' Dogwood and Elm units.
Muriel was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Helen and Fred Schlorff; her brother, Bob Schlorff, in 2018; her granddaughter, Betsy Hoort, in 2005; and her daughter, Amy Newman, in 2006.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 75 years, Bill Newman; her children, Margaret "Peggy" Newman-Hoort and William "Bill" Newman; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Traverse City.
