Richard John Schilling M.D.

GLEN ARBOR —Dr. Richard "Dick" J. Schilling, 90, a humble servant of Jesus Christ and a dear, dear friend to many, went home to be with his Lord, family by his side, on Feb. 26, 2018. Dick was born to George A. and Ruth (Tourner) Schilling in Detroit, on Jan. 12, 1928 and raised in Hinsdale, Illinois. His youth was spent working alongside his family caretakers and close friends, Floyd "Kelly" and Eleanor, in Hinsdale, Illinois, working the family farm near Attica, Indiana, and his beloved Glen Lake in Michigan, where his father instilled a love of the lake and cottage life, shared by his family to this day. Dick attended grammar and high school in Hinsdale, and was a knuckleball pitcher for the University of Michigan baseball team as an undergraduate, where he also enjoyed membership of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated from medical school at Indiana University and subsequently served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Korean War. In 1949, he married Frances "Betty" Fink and together raised three children, Kathryn E. (Schilling) Cozzens, Dr. Richard F. "Rick" Schilling and Nancy R. (Schilling) Stanwick in Grand Rapids, and Bloomington, Indiana. He maintained a surgical practice in Bloomington that was singularly focused on caring for his patients, and treasuring the friendship of many for life. Following retirement in 1984, Dick and his wife, Betty turned their attention to the medical mission field, serving in Kenya and Sierra Leone under World Medical Missions. Betty went home to be with her Savior during a mission to Sierra Leone in November of 1985. Dick married Barbara (Whiteside) in 1986, with whom he attended school in Hinsdale in the 1930s and 40s. Together they enjoyed many years with their cherished friends and family at Glen Lake, Bloomington and Sanibel, Florida. He also loved stomping around the oil fields of Indiana, Illinois and Texas during these years, enjoying the fellowship of his business partners and the thrill of watching drilling operations in the field. Business with Dick was regularly done on a handshake, indicative of his trust in people. Dr. Schilling continued with his missionary work in retirement with projects in Africa, Honduras, Mexico and elsewhere. Of particular importance to him is the work of Our Little Roses Foreign Mission Society, which focuses on providing rescue, education, and a lifetime of structured Christian love and support, as well as encouragement to orphaned and abused girls in Honduras. Known affectionately as "Opa" by his eight grandchildren, their spouses, and 10 great-grandchildren, Dick loved sailing on Glen Lake in his Flying Dutchman, fly fishing the Platte River and baseball at every level. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Detroit Tigers. Following in his father’s footsteps, he actively supported the programs of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Additionally, he was a patron of the Interlochen Center of the Arts and the Grand Traverse Musicale. He provided scholarships and encouragement to music students in all of these organizations. He was a life long member of the Glen Lake Yacht Club, where he twice served as commodore, and was involved in the start of the sailing program. He was a member of the Glen Lake Association and the St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church of Sanibel, Florida, where he treasured true Christian fellowship. Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Kathy (Bruce) Cozzens, Dr. Rick (Meredith) Schilling, Nancy (Greg) Stanwick; and stepson, Bill Harris (Jamie Moore). Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Jeff (Monica) Cozzens, Richard "Matt" (Amanda) Cozzens, Stuart Schilling (Jessica) Cozzens, Carolyn Schilling, Richard "Mac" (Morgan) Schilling, Samuel Schilling, Annie (Kelly) Kiogima, Rebecca "Becky" J. Stanwick, Katherine and Luke Moore; great-grandchildren, Franny and Gemma Cozzens, Graham, Max and Fisher Cozzens, Shepherd and Oliver Cozzens, Ruthie Jean Schilling, Paloma Schilling and Logan Kiogima; niece, Carolyn Schilling Gery; nephews, George W. Schilling, James Cheney and David Cheney. He was preceded in death by his parents, George A. and Ruth T. Schilling; brother, George T. Schilling; sister, Nancy Schilling Johnson; nephew, Christopher Cheney; and niece, Martha Schilling. Two celebrations of Dick’s life will be held in Sanibel, Florida and Glen Arbor. A celebration of life will take place on Friday August 3, 2018 at the Glen Lake Yacht Club; 6617 South Sunset Drive, Glen Arbor, MI 49636, at 3:00pm.
