Obituary

LAKE LEELANAU — Stuart D. Hubbell, 82, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, in the afternoon, at his home in Lake Leelanau, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Dec. 12, 1927, the son of Stuart and Mary Frances (Moriarity) Hubbell. He married the love of his life, Marian, on Jan. 26, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army in both World War II and the Korean War.Stuart was a member of a number of Catholic Parishes in this area, and he was proudly admitted into Grand Traverse Area Catholic School Hall of Fame in 2008. Although known locally as a successful attorney and businessman, he was also an accomplished painter. He loved to fish for trout but was never able to make the transition to a higher calling than being a worm dunker. Stuart is survived by seven children, Daniel (Barbara) Hubbell and Joseph (Amy) Hubbell, of Cedar, Dennis (Annette) Hubbell, of Low, Ontario, Canada, Paul (Brenda) Hubbell and Eileen (Joseph) Olson, of Traverse City, Thomas (Martha) Hubbell, of Honor, and Anne Marie Hubbell, of Lake Leelanau; a son by adoption, Ba Van Mai, of Houston Texas; 24 grandchildren, Kathleen, Meagan, Theresa, Michael, Thys, Thomas, Femke, Elizabeth, Sara, Rachel, Mary, Olivia, Madilynn, Claire, Colleen, Joseph, Caleb, Dibiangie, Harold, Kevin, Taylor, Emily, Timothy and Grace; and three great-grand children, Adrienne, Ellery and Hailey.Stuart was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Hubbell in 2003; a brother, James Hubbell; and a sister, Francine Armbruster. He leaves behind a loving family and many friends. Now that he is in heaven we know he will directly ask God to please help the Detroit Lions.Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. with Father Michael Janowski presiding. A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Joseph Blasko serving as celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation or the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools.
