Thomas David Moore

After an arduous and stubborn battle with cancer, Thomas David Moore died on March 4, 2017 in Traverse City, MI at the age of 81. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Moore and their beloved children; David Moore (Diana) of Lake Forest, IL, Natalie Brown (Bill) of Traverse City, and Rebecca Moore (Bob) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Tom was born on February 18, 1936 in Milwaukee, WI to the late Leslie and Sophie Moore. He grew up with his brother Jim (Sherry) and his sister, Virginia. (the late Brent Lillian.) In college, Tom excelled in science and math and graduated from Ripon College with a degree in Physics. He then went on to attend and graduate from MIT with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later he received Master of Engineering sciences degree from Penn State University. His education led Tom to interesting jobs in various states throughout the country and he finally landed in Traverse City in 1967. Tom fell in love with northern Michigan where he was able to easily indulge in his love for the outdoors, which included fishing and hunting (and catching ‘high-speed racing turtles’). Together Tom and MaryAnn met many wonderful friends who became their “Traverse City Family.” Tom tended to be quiet and MaryAnn to be social - theirs was a marriage of opposites - Tom was a conservative while MaryAnn remains a staunch liberal. Their love for each other and for their children and grandchildren, the laughter shared with friends, the joy of living in a beautiful place together made their marriage a strong and enduring union. Tom will be remembered as a remarkable fisherman (and the jovial host of many famous fish boils), an ethical hunter, a world traveler, a skilled contractor, a good friend and the best father and grandfather. He leaves behind 8 grandchildren: Tom Moore, Henry Moore, Benjamin Brown, Maddy Moore, Allyson Brown, Gabby Moore, Nate Bowers and Eleanor Bowers, and numerous grand dogs and grand cats. Never one for the spotlight, Tom would be uncomfortable with too much praise so we leave it to those who knew him to remember and honor him in their own ways. A memorial is set for April 15th in Traverse City at Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral home.
