Walter Upsall Cox

October 11, 1939 – February 21, 2026 Walter “Wally” Cox died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 21, 2026. He was 86 years old. A lifelong resident of Williamsburg, Michigan, Wally was the son of Walter and Mabel “Irene” (Skiver) Cox. He spent his childhood immersed in his family’s farming business which he would eventually establish as Lakeside Farms and grow to become one of the area’s top fruit producers and processors. Wally was the proud valedictorian of his high school graduating class of two! He earned a bachelor of science degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University and, following a brief period in Chicago’s advertising industry, devoted his life’s work to growing his business, improving farming, and increasing demand for the beloved Montmorency red tart cherry. In the 1960s, Wally was selected as one of 150 Kellogg Fellows to participate in the Kellogg Farmers Study Program, preparing young Michigan farmers for leadership in the industry. As a Kellogg Fellow, Wally became involved in local and national farming initiatives, traveled internationally to study global farming practices, and built friendships that would remain important to him throughout his life. As an avid sports fan, Wally was loyal to Tiger baseball and Spartan football and basketball. He played shortstop throughout high school and college, refereed high school basketball games, reeled in an untold number of salmon, and finally shot a hole-in-one at 83 years old. Above all else, Wally found the greatest joy and satisfaction in spending time with his family. His quick wit, warm laughter, and unwavering love are gifts that will live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him. Wally was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Andrea (Schall). He is survived by his son John Cox; daughter Jennifer (Chris) Ryder; three adoring and cherished grandchildren, Johannah, Wally, and McKenzie Ryder; and his sister Ronda Cox. Memorial contributions may be directed to Heartland Hospice of Traverse City, Michigan. A private service will be held for immediate family. His family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
