Elizabeth Jean (Garthe) Melkild, 96, of Traverse City, passed away March 29, 2019 at Munson Hospice House. Elizabeth was born May 10, 1922 in Petoskey to parents Charles and Jean (Foley) Garthe.
Elizabeth was a dedicated member of Central United Methodist Church, spending many hours participating in church functions and organizations. She also volunteered at Munson Medical Center over 25 years.
She graduated from Western Michigan University, and enjoyed a long teaching career. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling, knitting, bicycling, playing piano, singing, and reading.
Elizabeth is survived by her son Christopher Melkild; grandchildren Paul (Brandi) Melkild and Heidi (Benjamin Crosser) Browning; great-grandchildren Martin Melkild and Russell Crosser; and brother Larry (Henrietta) Garthe.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband Martin Melkild; sons David and Richard Melkild; siblings Charles Garthe and Katherine Winchell.
A memorial service celebrating Elizabeth's life will take place 12PM, Friday, May 17, 2019, at Central United Methodist Church, Traverse City. Family and Friends will be received from 11AM, until the time of service at the church. This summer she will be laid to rest in the Leelanau Township Cemetery, Northport. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church.
