April 26, 1927 - March 26, 2016
Fred Stenke, 88, of Traverse City, passed away on March 26, 2016 with his loving son by his side. Fred was born on April 26, 1927 to the late George and Augusta (Newman) Stenke in Ellsworth, MI. He was a man of many hats. He was raised in Bellaire, MI and that is where his story really begins. Fred was the most caring and compassionate person that one could meet. He would open his arms as quickly as he would open his home to you. As a child and into adulthood, Fred enjoyed doing a lot of outdoor activities. He loved to hunt deer, go mushroom picking and fishing. Fred enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served the country before being honorably discharged in 1946 with multiple medals. Once departing from the Navy, Fred enrolled in the Ford Trade School and received a certificate in tool and die, working at the Ford Company and also other’s in the area before moving further up north to not only work but also enjoy some of his special hobbies. Fred married Laverne (Oakley) and together they spent 57 years of wedded bliss. In 1968 Fred received the honor of shooting the biggest buck in all of Michigan, an accomplishment within the family that all are still trying to live up to as well. Fred was active in many different organizations. He was in the Kiwanis club, but most notably he was proud of his Mason status of Scottish Rights. While living in Gaylord he would go to the school and hand out pencils to all the children, learning that not only was it a treat for the children but it was also a rewarding experience and treat for him too. During the warmer months, all who knew Fred also knew that by simply stopping by you would be offered food and a cold beverage to share with him. Fred will always be remembered as the man that would give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed by many family members and friends. Fred is survived by his son Dale, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters of Traverse City, sister, Pauline Proctor of Manton, MI and his brother, George Stenke Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA. As well as my cousins and other family members. He was preceeded in death by his parents, wife and brother-in-law Earl Proctor. In accordance with Fred’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will be doing a private family memorial to honor the life of Fred at a later date. Memorial contributions in Fred's name may be made to the Kiwanis Club of Gaylord, P.O. Box 625 Gaylord, MI. 49734. The family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
