Hugh McMath

December 13, 1933 - December 7, 2020

Hugh McMath, 86, died in Traverse City on December 7, 2020 where he had lived for the past 24 years. He was born in Detroit on December 13, 1933. He was the oldest of seven children of Hugh and Mary (Dey) McMath. His parents immigrated from Scotland. Hugh was the patriarch of the Windsor, Detroit and Saginaw McMath clan. He was raised in Saginaw where he graduated from Arthur Hill High School. Hugh apprenticed as a brick mason when he was 17 years old. Becoming a stone mason was part of his McMath Scottish heritage. His grandfather Peter McMath was a stone mason in Glasgow, Scotland. His father became a brick mason in Saginaw. Many masonry buildings around Michigan had Hugh as the supervisor. Hugh loved his family. He liked being outside and was a great fisherman. He enjoyed traveling with favorite trips to Hawaii and Alaska. He liked music and reading. He loved being in the sunshine. He was also an avid University of Michigan fan. Hugh was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was a cherished part of Central’s Yokefellow #10. Hugh is survived by his beloved wife Sally; daughter-in-law Ann McMath; Son Robert McMath; daughter-in-law Michelle McMath; daughter Sandra (Steve) Gadille; sons Michael (Angela) McMath, Scott (Shelli Wixtrom) McMath; step daughters Michelle (Jeffrey) Wonacott and Nicole (Kurt) Lockwood. He leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He has three sisters Mary (William) Wiggins, Barbara (Bob) Tarbell, Susan (Tim) Sauer; brother Nelson (Linda) McMath; brother-in-law Tom Kren and sister-in-law Sharon McMath. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Gloria Jean Watz McMath; sons Greg McMath and Peter McMath; sister June Kren; brother David McMath and a daughter-in-law Joan McMath. The funeral service for family will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:30 am.
