Katharine L. Hanchett

April 1, 1935 - March 20, 2020

Katharine Lucille (Crain) Hanchett, 84, passed away Friday, March 20, 2020, while on vacation in Pharr, Texas. She was born in Traverse City, April 1, 1935, the daughter of Julius and Ardus (Widrig) Crain. She was proud to say she was a descendant of a Grand Traverse Area early settler. On August 27, 1955, Katharine married Joseph Miles Hanchett, who survives, and together they raised their four children, David (Deb) Hanchett, Sandra (Stan) Thompson, Jean (Richard) Carmien, and Debra (Donald) Wilcoxen, all who survive her. She will be missed by her grandchildren, C.J. Carmien, Greg Thompson, Brian Carmien, Paul (Sarah) Wilcoxen, Dana Thompson, Mark (Zenda Lasao) Hanchett, Nick (Ashley Combs) Hanchett, Josh (Randi Jo) Wilcoxen, Kyle (Nicki Lindahl) Carmien, Jason (Tiffany) Gee, Jennifer (Beau) Diehl, Andrew (Amanda) Wilcoxen, Alisa (John) Forton and Juliana Thompson. Her sixteen great grandchildren brought her extreme joy. Katharine was welcomed to heaven into the loving arms of her granddaughters, Kiersten Carmien and Kristy Hanchett and by her baby brother Kenneth Crain. Katharine was devoted to her family and friends. Her love and kindness shown through in everything she did. She was God‘s behind the scenes servant; providing for those in need within her family, at church, and in the community. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Traverse City for over 60 years. Katharine and Joe enjoyed their travels visiting numerous states and countries. They spent many years Square Dancing with the Buttons & Bows. She worked at the bookstore at Northwestern Michigan College and later at Coddington Cleaners. She belonged to the Eat A Lot Talk A Lot Club and if you knew her you knew how appropriate this was. She was known for her garage sale prowess and bargain shopping finds. Contributions in her memory may be made to First Christian Church, Sound System, 3686 South Airport Road W, Traverse City, Michigan 49684. Katharine has been laid to rest at Memorial Gardens in Traverse City. Services are planned for the Summer of 2020. Katharine and her family have been in the care of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg, Texas and Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
