Lorraine Marie Starr

May 15, 1962 - December 19, 2020

Lorraine Marie Starr, 58, a passionate woman and devoted mother, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2020 at her home due to complications of myelofibrosis. Lorraine was born on May 15, 1962 in Saginaw to the late Frank "Bill" and Alice (Johnson) Muessig. She grew up in Traverse City, and spent many fondly-remembered summers with family in Petoskey. Later, Lorraine worked as a group leader at the Sara Lee plant in Traverse City for over 30 years. In her free time, Lorraine enjoyed camping, hiking, rock-hunting, and kayaking. One of her favorite places to visit was the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising. She loved to be active, and spent most of her weekends and summers exploring Northern Michigan’s beautiful outdoors. Family and friends often joked that Lorri never stopped moving. She was also a skilled gardener, cook, and baker, and took up many DIY projects and hobbies over the years. She adored dogs and leaves behind her sweet dachshund Lilly. Above all else, Lorraine was a wonderful, dedicated mother who embodied strength, compassion, independence, and unconditional love for her daughter. Erica is endlessly grateful for the lessons and legacy left by her mom, and already deeply misses her. Lorraine will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Erica; husband Scott; siblings James, Debi, and Bill (Jeri Molitor) Muessig; grandmother Margaret Johnson; and many other grieving relatives and friends. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents William (Frieda) Muessig, Norman “Fletch” Johnson, and Thelma Wallace. The family would like to thank all of the healthcare professionals who cared for Lorraine. Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude for your care and support. During treatment for her disease, Lorraine happily participated in research studies with the hope of helping other myelofibrosis patients. In keeping with her spirit, memorial contributions may be directed to the MPN Research Foundation. The family also encourages all loved ones and community members to register as bone marrow donors via BeTheMatch.org. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 29 at 2 pm at the Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey. A luncheon hosted by the family will follow at 5346 Lake Grove Rd in Petoskey.
