Shirley was a member of Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Acme. She had been a Commissioner for Parks & Recreation and the Commission on Aging. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was an advocate for families, helping them achieve their dream of having a home of their own. Shirley came to Northern Michigan in the 1960’s, with a background in education, and devoted herself to teaching elementary and middle school children in the Elk Rapids School District, where she taught for over 30 years.
