March 17, 1937 - April 29, 2021
ACME – Shirley Ann Zerafa, age 84, Acme, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021, peacefully, at her home. Shirley was born March 17, 1937 in Detroit, MI to the late Charles and Sylvia (Nelson) Hammond. Shirley was a member of Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Acme. She had been a Commissioner for Parks & Recreation and the Commission on Aging. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was an advocate for families, helping them achieve their dream of having a home of their own. Shirley was also a Cherry Festival Ambassador and Director for several years. She loved traveling, watching the birds at her bird feeders, and gardening, as she was a Master Gardener. Shirley came to Northern Michigan in the 1960’s, with a background in education, and devoted herself to teaching elementary and middle school children in the Elk Rapids School District, where she taught for over 30 years. She highly valued serving in the community and advocated for under-represented populations (working poor, indigenous people, and seasonal workers). She assisted many individuals and families in their time of need throughout the years, often anonymously, with great integrity and respect. Her care for others has had an enduring effect. Shirley will be a remembered friend to many and was a role model and champion in her community. Shirley is survived by her children; Richard “Ben” Zerafa, Traverse City, Matthew (Eileen) Zerafa, Houston, TX, Carrie (Charles Lewis) Zerafa, Flagstaff, AZ, grandchildren; Charles Lewis and Aidan Zerafa, Flagstaff, AZ and her devoted dog, Katy. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy Stoutjesdyk, and son, Mark Zerafa. Her children continue to support her causes associated with those in need.
