Vanita Maxine Heim

August 14, 1939 - March 8, 2021

Vanita (Van) Maxine Heim (Saxton), 81, of Traverse City, passed away March 8, 2021 at Bay Ridge Assisted Living. Vanita, also known by her grandchildren as “Granny Vanny” was born in her family’s home in Kingsley, to parents Oliver and Rosetta (VanPelt) Saxton, August 14, 1939. Vanita graduated from Kingsley High School and was involved in many school activities and sports. Vanita married David Heim on February 1, 1958. The couple would go on to welcome three children into their lives. After the kids entered high school she started working at a local credit union and later as a secretary with a local union. Vanita loved having family and friends around and was often the life of the party. She was an avid golfer and played courses all over northern Michigan, although Elmbrook in Traverse City was always her home base. She also played in several bowling leagues through the years. She and David had a red 2000 Corvette, which they piled miles on with the top down. They would go to car shows and tour the area, enjoying the summer breeze together. The couple also traveled all over, including trips to Cabo San Lucas, Alaska and New Zealand. Vanita leaves behind her three children, David Jr. (Debbie), Loree (Mike) and Deborah (Ron); her beloved grandchildren Justin (Laura), Stacy (Derek), Zachary Collett, Jennifer (Victor), Aimee Hall and Samantha (Bill); 10 great-grandchildren; siblings Wayne Saxton and Valita Wolf; as well as other extended family members and friends. Preceded in death by her husband David and brother William. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. She will be laid to rest next to David, in Kingsley’s Evergreen Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Vanita may do so by purchasing gift cards to be used for the needs of the residents. Bayridge staff loved and cared for Vanita, her smile and her sassy style.
