Obituary

Alice Ward, 90, passed away May 17 with family near her. Alice is proceeded in death by her parents, Thomas and Evelyn Chapman Fath, a sister Clara (Fath) Oliver, and two brothers Fred Fath and Thomas Fath, Jr.

Alice lived a life that embodied adventure, generosity, and unshakable spirit. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, she charted a course that took her across the skies, over the seas, and into the hearts of those who knew her. From her early career with Lakeland Airlines to her influential roles with TWA and Continental Airlines, Alice helped shape the travel industry—not just as a stewardess, but later as a skilled sales representative. She even played a part in crafting Continental Airlines' memorable slogan in the 1970s: "Yes, we really move our tail for you, to make your every wish come true. At Continental Airlines – we really move our tail for you."

Her passion for travel didn't stop with the airlines. She transitioned into tourism, promoting cruise packages before founding her own company, Alice in Funderland, a venture that catered to senior travelers. In her role as Senior Administrative Director of STRAC (Senior Travel Recreation Council), Alice made sure that the golden years of life were filled with exploration, laughter, and community.

California was her home for most of her life—San Pedro, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Palm Desert all became places where she left her mark. In later years, she spent time in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois with her beloved family. To her nieces and nephews—17 of them, along with 35 great-nieces and nephews and 34 great-great-nieces and nephews—she was affectionately known as Aunt Nal. She set a high bar for living fully and joyfully, never allowing early circumstances to define her limits. She encouraged those around her to embrace their own boundless possibilities, often stirring up good trouble to challenge preconceived notions. Even in her later years, Alice remained a free spirit, proud of every decision she made, never looking back with regret.

She loved the water, hosting annual Super Bowl parties, and caring deeply for both seniors and animals alike. Her Catholic faith guided her, and she gave freely—her love, her wisdom, and her time. To those who cared for her at Riverside Nursing and Rehab and Hospice of Michigan, her family extends a heartfelt thank you.

Alice Ward's life will be celebrated in Indianapolis in June, honoring a woman who never stopped moving forward and never stopped lifting others up. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's research, the ASPCA, or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary—causes that reflect her kindness, devotion, and love for all living things.

Alice lived boldly, loved deeply, and inspired endlessly. May she forever travel among the stars.
