Obituary

CEDAR — Amelia "Emily" Petroskey passed away Monday evening at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, following a short illness.Born Emma Durina on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1925, in Pellston, to Steven and Mary (Ambrocik) Durina, Emily was adopted by Joseph and Mary (Osga) Kurth following the death of her mother.Emily graduated Creston High School in Grand Rapids in 1944. She attended St. Lawrence School of Nursing following high school, where she received her Registered Nursing Degree in 1950.On July 28, 1951, she married Joseph Petroskey at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Traverse City. She moved to Cedar, where she resided until her death.Throughout her nursing career, she worked as a RN at Munson Hospital, in a physician's private practice, for the Summer Migrant Healthcare Program, and Maple Valley Nursing Home. Before retirement, she worked in housekeeping at Sugar Loaf Resort part-time, where she said it was more relaxing to just clean, without the responsibilities of nursing.In earlier years, Emily enjoyed bowling and would bowl as a member of a local team with other women.Emily's hobbies included knitting and raising flowers and plants. Over the years, countless sweaters, scarves, hats and mittens were made for family members and friends. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, but her greatest joys were seeing and visiting her grandchildren.Emily is survived by her sister, Sister Pauline Marie of Manitowoc, Wis.; four sons, Dan (Donna), Larry (Cheryl), Ron and Gerry (Barb), all of Cedar; five grandchildren, Erin (Lou) Bufka, Melanie, of Cedar, Brent and his fiancée, Ashley, of Lake Ann, Brad, of Bristow, Va., and Sara, of Portland, Maine; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Lou Bufka.She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents, Steven and Mary Durina; adoptive parents, Joseph Kurth, and Joseph and Mary Stefaniak; one grandson, Nicholas; brothers, George, Joseph and Stephan; and one stepbrother, Thomas.Visitation will be this evening, Dec. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Scripture Service and Rosary at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with visitation from 10:30 until the time of Mass. The Rev. Donald Libby will officiate.
