Amy Asplund
Amy Asplund, 53, lost her nearly two year battle with cancer on Thursday July 24, 2014.
She was born on April 21, 1961, in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. She grew up in Big Rapids, Michigan and is a graduate of Big Rapids High School and Central Michigan University.
Amy will be remembered for her equestrian achievements with her beloved Morgan mare, Charlie, where they won numerous competitions throughout the United States and two national championships. Amy brought that competitive nature to her career as she advanced in her chosen career field of waste management, where she held management positions with waste management companies in Traverse City, Chicago, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix and Atlanta. In each of her roles, Amy was known for mentoring members of her team and taking a personal interest in their lives. She most recently served as South Region Controller for five states and the Bahamas for the Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. This spring she was honored with the prestigious Chairman's Award at the annual meeting of the Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. The CEO of Advanced Disposal made the presentation and said in his recognition of Amy that "she turned around the accounting department and systems of Advanced Disposal-Atlanta when it was do-or-die, in what is now one of our largest, most integrated and successful marketplaces in the company. Without the knowledge and get-to-work attitude of this lady, we would be a far different company then what we have grown into over the last eight years with her help. Human cloning is not ethical in my book, but if there could ever be an exception, this is who I would advocate to copy."
Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents and a stepbrother, Chris Priebe.
Her kindness will be missed by her husband, Ralph Manville, of Atlanta, GA; her father, Dr. Charles (Pam) Asplund, of Muskegon, MI.; her mother, Ann Steury (Don) Priebe, of Big Rapids, MI.; sister, Beth Asplund, of Atlanta, GA; brothers, Nathan (Carolina) Asplund, of Fort Worth, TX; Jeffrey Steury, of Suttons Bay, MI; sister-in-law Charlotte (Billie) Drake of Traverse City, MI; stepdaughter Lisa (Zac) Emery and grand daughters Kayden and Macyn all of Buckley, MI.
A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday August , 2014 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 sixth st., Traverse City, MI.. A memorial fund is being established in Amy's name for employees of Advanced Disposal who are fighting cancer.
a celebration of Amy's life will also be held later this summer in Big Rapids, MI.
