Angie Mapes left this world 8/14/20 the same way she lived her life. As soon as she was ready for the Lord, she fearlessly grabbed her keys and purse, then went right out the door.
Born to Serbian immigrants, Ostoja and Milka Gagic, Angie was raised in a Serbian community in Barberton OH. Along with her sister Pauline, Angie didn't know how to speak English until she started public school. From her parents, they taught her how to be strong and how to be an amazing "old world" cook.
She met Mike Mapes, and in 1962, they both moved to Traverse City to start their family. She gave birth to two son's Mike and Bob. She was a devoted, strong, loving mother.
Angie was also a very dedicated hard worker. After her divorce in 1976, she was a Kelly Girl, worked at Super Tool, The Data Center, Cobbs Jewelry, Shell Drilling and United Tech.
After she retired, she wrote her own biography. She also was known to some as the "cookie lady". She would bake oatmeal cookies and deliver them to her friend's. She also had an excellent eye and passion for jewelry. She enjoyed loading herself down with her "bling". She always looked very good, even out in the yard.
Angie instilled by example a strong work ethic, deeply compassionate giving, fearlessness, unwavering devotion, and an eagerness to smile and laugh, especially around babies.
It's important for the family to acknowledge Medilodge Nursing Home and Hospice of Michigan. To a person, Mom received a level of care our family could only have hoped for. The entire staff truly loves what they do and Mom was the beneficiary. They made her last three and a half years with Alzheimer's that much easier.
The family has decided to postpone Mom's service until social distancing has past. An announcement will be made at that time. Condolences can be sent to 5961 Norton Road, Grawn, MI 49637.
