Obituary

Ann Louise Hanson, 64, of Traverse City passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.

Ann was born on Monday, October 23, 1950 to the late Leo and Marjorie (Graybill) Herkelmann in Clinton, IA. Following her graduation from Clinton High School, she continued her education, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Music from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA. Ann taught elementary music for one year in Urbandale, IA before moving to Interlochen to begin work at the Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA). She married Byron Hanson on August 28, 1982 in the Dendrinos Chapel on the campus of the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Ann began her 40 year career at the Interlochen Center for the Arts as a cabin counselor and unit leader at the National Music Camp in 1970, was Intermediate Girls camp director 1973-82, IAA residence life staff 1973-81, and then served from 1981-2012 as Dean of Students, Assistant to the IAA Director, and Director and Vice President of Human and Institutional Resources. Ann was a member of Central United Methodist Church as well as a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.


She is survived by her husband, Byron Hanson of Traverse City; daughters Meredith Hanson of Lake Placid, NY and Lindsay Hanson of Princeton, NJ; a sister, Kathie Herkelmann of Traverse City, a sister-in-law, Eileen Combs of Knoxville, TN and many beloved friends. Ann was preceded in death by her parents.

A service celebrating Ann's life will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, with Pastor Chris Lane officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
