Anne Elizabeth Hamilton, née Doran, died peacefully in Traverse City, Michigan, on October 14, 2024. She was 91.
Anne was born on June 25, 1933, in Lake Linden, Michigan, to Katherine and John Doran, and grew up in Muskegon, Michigan. She attended Mercy Central School of Nursing in Grand Rapids and accepted a position as a student intern at Charlevoix Hospital. Charlevoix native Nicholas (Nick) Hamilton noticed her at church and arranged a blind date with friends. Anne and Nick were married in 1955 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Muskegon. She gave birth to their children, Susan Jane in 1956 and Nicholas John in 1958.
In 1960, Anne and Nick moved their family to Traverse City, where she worked as a nurse at Munson Medical Center until her retirement. Anne found great joy in serving her community. A lifelong and devout Catholic, she volunteered at Immaculate Conception Church's food pantry and cared for the church flowers. Anne, the daughter of a librarian, instilled a love of reading in her children and grandchildren and was a longtime volunteer at the Traverse Area District Library. She loved art and history and volunteered for many years at the Dennos Museum gift shop. She will also be remembered for her passion for trains and train travel.
Anne is preceded in death by her husband, Nick. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Gillen (Timothy Sr.); son, Nick; grandchildren, Ruth Anne Kirwan (Colm), Timothy Jr. (Alicia), and Harrison (Alexis); and great-grandchildren, Niamh, Francis, and Isla.
In lieu of flowers, Anne's family requests donations be made in her name to the Traverse Area District Library (tadl.org/donate). Visitation will be on Saturday, October 19th from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m, at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City.
