Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Anthony Dobry, 96, of Traverse City, formerly of Grayling and Sterling Heights, passed away Nov. 13, 2010, at Tendercare in Traverse City.Anthony was born July 6, 1914, to the late John and Rosalie Dobrzynski, in Pennsylvania. While growing up, he worked in the coal mines to help provide for his family. At a young age he learned the importance of hard work, and even helped create the Unions for the coal miners.On Sept. 4, 1941, Anthony married his wife, Eleanor, in Buffalo, N.Y.By day, Anthony was active in city politics for Sterling Heights; but by night, he was a machine repairman for Chrysler. He enjoyed serving on the city council from 1968-81.Some of the highlights of Anthony's life include meeting President Jimmy Carter at the White House, being a stunt parachute jumper, and earning his GED from Crawford-Au Sable School District at the age of 86.In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to classical music, opera, and the Three Tenors. He also loved spending time with his family. They will forever remember his "Dadisms" that he taught them.Anthony is survived by his children, Mary Ann (Fred) Schmitt, of Calumet, Margaret Waggoner, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Barbara Sands, of Grayling, John Dobry, of Macomb, Nancy Dobry, of Traverse City, and Carol (Eric) Currin, of Traverse City; brother, Carl (Mira) Dobrzynski, of Warren; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and many other loving family and friends, including Roger Sands and Kathy Dobry.Anthony was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; parents; siblings, Ted, Edward, Ann, Sophie and Henry; and son-in-law, Dan Waggoner.Visitation for friends and family will be held this evening, Nov. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.Fr.
