Arlen J. "Art" Husted, 76, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, July 20, 2010, at his home in Peninsula Township.
Born May 26, 1934, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of the late Walter F. and Grace (Brackett) Husted. On Sept. 25, 1954, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Valerie G. Herron. Their marriage of nearly 56 years was filled much laughter and love; they were the "best of friends."
An honorably discharged veteran, Art answered the call of duty and faithfully served his country with the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.
A resident of Traverse City since 1970, Art was formerly employed as an Installation Supervisor for AT&T, and later worked for Lucent Technology, among others. During retirement years, he was employed by the Bill Marsh Automotive Group, where he worked as a shuttle driver. He thoroughly liked interacting with his customers, listening to Rush Limbaugh to spark conversation and viewing the Grand Traverse Region during his travels.
Art was a gifted repairman who could fix just about anything, except for his troublesome chain saw. His legacy will live on through his sons, who acquired his determination, abilities and his "Mr. Fixit" skills.
He enjoyed politics, boating, puttering around in the yard, traveling, and loved dogs. Art and his wife, Val were looking forward to a fall cruise in Alaska.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie Husted of Traverse City; two sons, Gary (Sharon) Husted of Suttons Bay and Terry (Sandy) Husted of Kewadin; five grandchildren, Chauncey Husted, Karen Husted, Brittany (special friend, Patrick Darga) Husted and Eric and Edward Englund; siblings, Donna (Jason) Herron of Kentwood, Margie (Eugene) Robach of Grand Rapids and David (Diane) Husted of Jenison; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved Shih Tzu, Libby.
A gathering for family and friends will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday, July 24, 2010, from 4 to 7 p.m. Cremation has taken place.
In remembrance of Art, memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
