(Churchman) Anderson. On Dec. 31,1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, Arlene entered into marriage with Dr. Douglas W. Frantz Sr. He preceded her in death in 2003.Arlene attended Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. It was during her freshman year that she met Doug, the love of her life. Arlene and Doug spent their early years of marriage in Detroit, moving with their family to Traverse City in 1950.Arlene was known by many as a supportive person who valued family and her many friendships. She revered her special "sewing club" group and the labor day picnic group. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, whose care and love for her husband, children and grandchildren was limitless. As a long-time member of the Traverse City community, Arlene's faithful volunteer pursuits included the Dennos Museum, Central United Methodist Church, the Traverse City Public Schools, and various foreign exchange student programs. She was a former board member of Child and Family Services of Northwestern Mich. and was a member of the Northwest Michigan Artist and Craftmen Association.Arlene's passion was for the visual arts, particularly watercolor and acrylics. As a gracious hostess, her tables never lacked for an artfully arranged centerpiece. Her creativity was also expressed in poems that she loved to write and give to friends and family at special times throughout the year. Other interests that she enjoyed were music, playing bridge and golf.Surviving Arlene are her children, Douglas (Laura) Frantz of Brattleboro, Vermont, Dennis (Diane) Frantz of Traverse City, David (Linda) Frantz of Bend, Oregon, and Donna (Michael) Flynn of Traverse City. Her grandchildren include Isaac Evans-Frantz of New York, New York, Emily Flynn of Washington, DC, and Rachel Flynn of Chicago. In addition to her loving husband, Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ida Mae McCormick; and brothers, Charles Anderson and Lynn Anderson. The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Cook and all staff members at Hawthorn Cottage, Willow Cottage and the Grand Traverse Pavilions for the excellent, compassionate care that Arlene received.A memorial service celebrating Arlene's life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Central United Methodist Church.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dennos Museum Center or to the Grand Traverse Pavilions. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
