Arnold G. Ankerson, 85, lifelong resident of Traverse City, went home to His Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 25, 2014 after a long illness.
Arnold was born on October 22, 1929 on the family farm to the late Thomas and Nellie (Smith) Ankerson. He married Barbara Jean Albright on March 29, 1969 in Traverse City.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. He was an Army Corporal in Fort Eustis, VA. Following Basic Training, he went to Firefighting School and was First Mate and part time Skipper on the Fire Boat in Fort Eustis, VA.
After his return from service he went to work for Cone Drive Gear for 25 dedicated years and 15 years in supervision. He retired as the Foreman Shop Superintendent and Chief Expeditor.
Arnold was a member of the Eagles Club for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and the occasional trip to the casino. In his spare time Arnold enjoyed, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was especially talented with carpentry even building his own home which he was proud to live his entire life in.
Surviving Arnold is his wife Barbara of 45 years, daughters Connee (Terry) Wayne of South Lyon, Denise Ankerson of California, Edith Ankerson of Traverse City, three grandchildren, sisters Maxine Ballentine of Traverse City, Jean (Laverne) Zenner of Detroit, brothers, Paul (Cyr) Ankerson of Traverse City, Gerald (Shirley) Ankerson of Traverse City, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arnold is preceded in death by his parents, beloved son Michael in 1983 at the tender age of 14, brothers, Merle, Donald, Kenneth and Leo, sisters Arlene Horton, and Bonnie Zenner, and several nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
Visitation for Arnold will be held on Monday December 29, from 4-7pm at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A Prayer Service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a visitation held from 10-11. Pastor Ted Smith will serve as Officiant. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice.
