Arthur "Art" Gindin M.D.

Arthur (Art) Gindin M.D., of Traverse City, Michigan, passed on July 3, 2025, at age 90. A Board-Certified Neurosurgeon. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Laster, father Robert Gindin and first wife Margaret Forsyth. He is survived by his wife Sara R. Gindin with whom he raised three children Ohlivia, Edward, and Amanda. He had four children with his first wife, Mark, Elizabeth (Jane), Jillian, and Suzanne (D.M), and 5 grandchildren, Max, Meggie, Mario, Caroline, and Lorin. Arthur graduated from the Medical College of Virginia as an M.D. in 1959. He later did a residency there. He had residencies in both the U.S. and Canada (Montreal Neurological Institute). He was a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service. He was a doctor at one of John Fitzgerald Kenedy's inaugural Ball's. He would say, "nobody else wanted to do it". He even climbed a tree at the Inaugural itself to get pictures and had to explain to the police why a doctor was up a tree. He loved photography. While he was in service, he did time in the Division of Radiological Health. He read his own films. Art was an instructor and Asst. Professor in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He also was Chief of Neurosurgery at a VA Hospital and worked for the Georgia prison system. He was a frustrated saxophonist and loved jazz which was played when possible, during surgery. Dr. Gindin went into private practice in Midland and Petoskey, Michigan; Portsmouth, Ohio; Monroe, Wisconsin; and Princeton, West Virginia. In West Virginia another love of his life, Politics took hold, and he ran for U.S. Senator. From childhood he always enjoyed everything in life. He was a graduate of Highland Park, N.J. High School. He loved Boy Scouts (he still has the badges), track, swimming, academic honors, etc. As an adult, when he retired, he did RVing to see the U.S. then enjoyed helping to build his house. He loved gardening, calligraphy, exploring the internet, animals, nature, needlepoint, and so on. Art had his own library. He could speak at least two other languages past English and traveled Europe right after WWII and then later. He wrote or co-authored 9 medical publications, yet he always had time to meet with families of loved ones in his care anywhere, anytime. The thing he loved most were people. He wanted to retire to a cabin in the woods. He loved where he lived. Art was kind, patient, and understanding. He will be sorely missed. The family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
