Barbara Gail Gielow

Barbara Gail Gielow, 74, of Traverse City passed away Monday, October 3, 2016 in the loving and gracious care of the staff at Traverse Victorian Senior Living in Traverse City.

Barbara was born on Friday, December 5, 1941 to the late Ivan and Doris (Gardner) Pixler in Spencer, IA. She loved horses and enjoyed time at Lake Okoboji and a summer in Boulder, CO. She graduated from Spencer High School and then continued her education at Drake University, earning her bachelors degree in art education.
Barb and her husband made their home in Warren, but would spend time on his family farm here since their marriage. In 1990, following retirement, they moved to the farm permanently. She was a gifted artist with a passion for nature and outdoor settings. She painted many galleried canvases as well as creating many block prints, but enjoyed working in all medias. Barbara also had worked as a proof reader at Catholic Publishing Co. and at the hospitality desk of the Grand Traverse Mall. At one time she also had worked in a frame shop in Grosse Pointe. She was a member of the Traverse Area Arts Council, now the Crooked Tree Arts Center. Barb and Richard enjoyed traveling all over the country, often in an RV, and finally settling on winters in Gulf Shores, AL while enjoying the rest of the year at their home on Grand Traverse East Bay.

Barbara is survived by her husband Richard M Gielow of Traverse City who she married on October 24, 1974. Also surviving are two sons, Jeff (Kariane) Glinter of Boulder, CO. James C. (Turi) Everett of Sweden, 7 grandchildren, Aria, Russell, Kyle, Zoe, Talia, Theo and Pierce; a brother, Ivan (Patti) Pixler, of Black Hills, SD; sister, Janis (Tom) J Pixler-Lindsey of Denver, CO, four nieces and nephews and her dog, Bear.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Penny Pixler and her step-son, Richard and his wife, Elizabeth.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to Traverse Victorian Senior Living, 461 Munson Avenue, Traverse City, MI 49686 to be used for the resident activity fund.
