Barbara Doty Vogel, 96, of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Orchard Creek.
Barb was born on March 23, 1926 in Staten Island, NY, as the daughter of the late Solomon and Gertrude Coppens. She was the beloved wife of the late George A. Vogel. In addition to her parents and George, she was preceded in death by brother Jack H. Coppens, sister Alice Diggins, sister Dorothy Matus, brother Robert Coppens, brother James Coppens and brother in laws Dr. Richard K. Vogel and Charles W. Vogel.
Barb is survived by her sons Dr George (Donna) A. Vogel, Jr. and David (Denisa) A. Vogel, five grandsons, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews.
She attended Empire School and, after moving to Detroit, she graduated from McKenzie High School. As a teenager she saved two small girls from drowning in Lake Michigan. After school Barb taught girl scouts to swim. Barb worked at J.L. Hudson for 3 years. In 1948 she married George A. Vogel in Toledo, Ohio. In her spare time she was a volunteer at Green Memorial Hospital, a PTA president, a den mother and raised and trained a German shorthaired pup for show and field work.
In 1972 George retired from civil service at WPAF Base in Dayton, Ohio and they moved to Suttons Bay, Michigan where they enjoyed their retirement years. Barbara loved music, gardening, cooking, swimming, reading, riding her bike and giving dinner parties.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Suttons Bay-Bingham Library.
