TRAVERSE CITY — Bernard H. Flickinger, 91, of Grand Rapids, a man known for his perpetual kindness, a former longtime resident of Traverse City, went to be with his Lord on March 10, 2011, at St. Ann's Home in Grand Rapids.Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of the late Harry and Josephine (Homrich) Flickinger. On Oct. 30, 1945, at St. Francis Rectory in Traverse City, he married the former Donna M. Wiesler.Both Bernard and Donna served their country during World War II in the United States Army and United States Navy respectively. Bernard was part of the military force that freed prisoners being held in Dachau.Bernard was a Master Electrician and a 60-year founding member of the IBEW #498. He was also an accomplished guitarist and a talented woodcarver. He was a member of St. Francis Parish for 65 years. Bernard will be fondly remembered for his deep faith in God, his love of family and his gentle spirit. Left to cherish his memory are his four children, James (Lois) Flickinger, of Grand Rapids, Sally (Steve) Sageman, of Canton, Gary (Carol) Flickinger and Craig Flickinger, all of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bernard was preceded in death by his lifelong love and wife of 50 years, Donna. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Merle Flickinger and Doris Dood.Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, March 14, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Fr. Kenneth Stacknik will serve as the celebrant. Graveside services with full military honors under the auspices of the V.F.W. Cherryland Post #2780 will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.In remembrance of Bernard, memorials may be directed to Amazon Relief, c/o James B.
