Betty Louise Emerson, 76, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
Betty was born May 21, 1934, in Grandville. She was raised by the late A. Christopher and L. Lucille (Bohlender) Andersen in Beulah. She married Jack T. Emerson, of Traverse City, on May 12, 1956, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort.
Betty was a graduate of Benzie Central High School. She was employed as an operator and clerk at Michigan Bell Telephone Company prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a member of the local VFW.
Mom cherished spending time with the joys of her life, her granddaughters, Meghan and Ericka. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, and being involved with the VFW along with her husband. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time at the family cottage on Long Lake.
Betty will be remembered by her family and friends for her infectious smile; tender, caring heart; and teaching us about love, compassion and forgiveness.
Betty is survived by her children, Thomas (Vickie) Emerson, of Williamsburg, and their daughter, Ericka; Barbara (Scot) Maue, of Traverse City, and their daughter, Meghan. Betty is also survived by her caring brothers and sisters-in-law, Joanne and Dale Gary, Dick and Arlene Emerson, Jack and Jean Horn, all of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, on July 18, 2009; brother, William Andersen, of Beulah; and very special in-laws, Vern and Viola Emerson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bortz Health Care and Hospice of Michigan. Their loving care of our mother during the most difficult time of her life is something we appreciate more than words can convey. You were like family to mom and she loved you all.
A private memorial service will take place in May. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
