Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Flaska

Betty Flaska, 90, life long resident of Leelanau County passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026.

Betty was born in Cedar on October 31, 1935 to the late William Adam and Mary Veronica (Miller) Stachnik.

On May 23, 1969 she married William Earl Flaska in Leland.

Betty was the head of housekeeping at Sugar Loaf for over 20 years. She was a member of the Cedar Chamber of Commerce, served on the Solon Township on the Planning Commission and was a dedicated volunteer for nearly 20 years at the Women’s Resource Center. She was also a parishioner at Holy Rosary and member of Al Anon.

She loved to travel in their motorhome to Florida and Arizona with their dog Sadie. She also liked to look for treasures at swap meets and flea markets. She also was a great fan of softball and loved to cheer on her children and extended family in Cedar. She will be remembered with love by her family for being happy, loving, giving and of course a little spicy.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Helen Nachazel, Margaret Shorter, Theresa Steinbach, and Rosemary Pierson.

Betty is survived by her husband Bill Flaska; children Robert Dean, Veronica “Vicky” Dean, Douglas (Sherry) Dean and Duane (Kathy) Flaska; grandchildren Shane (Danielle), Abigail (Isaac), Douglas (Andriana) Jr.; great granddaughters Lyra Flaska and Willow Jane and sister Gertrude Shorter.

Visitation for friends and family will be held on May 13, 2026 from 4 to 7 pm at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in her honor may be directed to the Women’s Resource Center or to the Leelanau Conservancy for Sugar Loaf.
