Betty Ann Fryer

July 9, 1930 — November 2, 2015

Betty Ann Fryer, 85, of Maple City passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2015 with her loving husband and family, by her side.

Betty was born on July 9, 1930 in Middleborne, WV to the late Ernest and Kathleen (Barnhart) Beck. She married the love of her life, Wallace Gordon Fryer on December 29, 1950 in Detroit, MI. They were blessed with four wonderful children, Ernie, Kate, Steven and Chip.

Betty cared deeply for people, young and old. After her children started school, she embarked on a longtime career with Maple Valley Nursing Home. Starting out working in the kitchen, she soon found her compassion for the elderly, was her true calling. She then moved into a nursing assistant position and while working, attended NMC. In the top five in her class, Betty graduated at 52 years of age, the oldest graduate in the Nursing program. Following graduation she was offered many different career opportunities in the region, but decided that her heart was at Maple Valley and caring for the elderly residents. She worked there until she retired after 20 dedicated years.

In her spare time Betty enjoyed playing solitaire, cooking/baking, and watching sports. She loved to cheer her team on for every game, especially with Isiah Thomas as her all-time favorite player. She found deep peace and much joy, tending to her beautiful gardens of both vegetables and flowers.

Above everything though, Betty treasured her family the most and time spent together. She had an open door and loved having everyone over for Sunday dinners; she loved celebrating birthdays with special dinners and cakes. Everyone that came to Betty's house knew that they were welcome and she loved cooking for them. Her pies were the best in Leelanau County and made with love.

Betty will fondly be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandma, great grandma and friend. Her smile, sense of humor and love of people, will truly be missed.

Surviving Betty is her dedicated husband Wally of almost 65 special years; children, D. Ernie (Beth) Fryer, Kathleen "Kate" Fryer, Steven Fryer, Wallace "Chip" (Melissa) Fryer; 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, siblings; Jack, Jim and Jean, and a great granddaughter, Cheyenne Fryer.
