TRAVERSE CITY — Betty Jean Walsh, 89, of Traverse City, departed this earth for her heavenly reward on May 25, 2011, while living at Hope Village Senior Residence Center in Williamsburg.Betty was born in Antrim County on May 18, 1922, the daughter of William V. and Emma D. (Teunis) Coeling. She lived in Ellsworth, where she graduated from high school. She then proceeded to Michigan State University, where she earned a master's degree in Music. She then taught secondary education in several cities in Michigan, finally retiring after marrying John "Jack' Walsh in Birmingham. They then moved to Traverse City, where they made their home together in the early 1970s.Betty was an accomplished classical pianist, a licensed aircraft pilot, and a wonderful gardener. Her entire yard was a collection of flowers, decorative bushes, and a large vegetable garden that she lovingly tended daily. She loved horses, dogs, cats, and all other domestic animals.One of her favorite activities during the past few years was taking short driving tours with her good friend and caregiver, John M. Shephard, and stopping for lunch at different restaurants in northern Michigan. She also enjoyed picnics at various bayside parks in the area.Betty was preceded in death by her mother and her father; her brother, William Coeling; and her sister, Ethyl Coeling, of Norwood.She is survived by nieces, Patricia Guillaume, of Harbor Springs, and Amy Stolt, of Pensacola, Fla.; as well as two step-daughters, Joan O'Brien, of El Sobrante, Calif., and Sharon Cameron, of Birmingham.Cremation has taken place. There will be a graveside reading and inurnment at 7 p.m. June 7 at Norwood Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to A C PAW, P. O.
