TRAVERSE CITY — Beverly Joan Gourdie, 77, of Traverse City, died Thursday evening, March 3, 2011, at her home with her loving family by her side.Born March 7, 1933, in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late Ronald and Garnet (Fastbender) Stevens. On Sept. 18, 1954, in Detroit, she married William D. Gourdie.Bev was raised in the Detroit area and graduated from Centerline High School with the class of 1951. Bev furthered her education and graduated from Sparrow Hospital - School of Nursing in Lansing. In 1956, the Gourdies moved to Traverse City. She was formerly employed by Munson Medical Center as a Registered Nurse and at a private doctor's office. Bev enjoyed collecting antiques and operated a booth at Bay West Antiques for 10 years.Her activities and interests included past church council, Stevens Minister and a 42-year member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, past president and longtime member of the Friendly Garden Club, founding member of Trillium Garden Club, member of Questers Antique Club and member of Grand Traverse Power Squadron.Bev and Bill began boating after retirement and spent many happy years touring the Great Lakes and Canada. They spent many wonderful winters in Venice, Fla., and all their summers enjoying the back yard gardening, beaches and town of Traverse City with their family.Bev is survived by her husband of 56 years, William "Bill" D. Gourdie, of Traverse City; children, Cheryl and Jim Scales, of Rockford, and their children, Christine and Jimmy; Brett and Mandora Gourdie, of Traverse City, and their son, Levi; Chanda and John Marson, of Round Lake, Ill., and their children, Tyler, Nick and Cameron; and sister, Connie and Archie McIntyre, of Shelby Township. She is also survived by Bill's family, Maxine and Richard Melvin, of Hartford, Barrett and Joan Gourdie, of Barrington, Ill., and Bradford (deceased) and Moreen Gourdie, of Apopka, Fla.; along with many nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Bev was also preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Esther Gourdie. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, March 7, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m., where the Gourdie family will receive friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. David Gabel officiating. Graveside services with burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery later in the day. In remembrance of Bev, memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to Munson Hospice.
