Billy Bouman

June 9, 1952 — February 6, 2024

Traverse City- William (Billy) Bouman, 71, of Traverse City, passed away of natural causes Tues., Feb 6th, 2023 at MediLodge of Traverse City.

Although Billy was born mentally impaired on June 9th, 1952, in Traverse City, it didn't deter him from making a difference in the many lives that he touched. Because of him, many local children benefited with the first classroom for the mentally impaired being established here in Traverse by a local group which included his parents (William A Bouman and Doris Beverly Oliver). His father became a member of the local Mental Health Board, and his sister (Cheryl) became a teacher of the mentally impaired.
Everyone who came in contact with him remembers him as a happy, gentle, and caring man who said little but gave unconditional love.

He enjoyed being involved in any group activity at MediLodge of T.C. where he spent his final 21 years.
Previously to this he lived at Lapeer Training Home and in Mt. Pleasant. In 1972 he moved to Greenfield Farms in Traverse City. While at the farm he had many happy memories including a trip to Disney World and even shaking hands of Gov. Williams while participating in the annual bridge walk. He also worked at Traverse City industries from 1978-2017. In 2003 he survived treatments for 3rd stage cancer and was placed at MediLodge of T.C.

You could catch him many times moving to rock and roll music, singing along with his favorite tunes, showing off his many stuffed animals, and laughing at the antics of the Three Stooges.
His life and purpose on Earth was a positive one in which we all could learn from.
Billy is survived by his sister Cheryl. Billy was preceded in death by his parents.

Cheryl would like to extend her sincere thanks to the staff of MediLodge of T.C. and to Heartland (Promedica) Hospice for their love, care, and the many acts of kindness shown toward Billy.
A Celebration of Life was done in March of 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to MediLodge of T.C or to Heartland Hospice (formally Promedica). Interment will be at Memorial Gardens of Traverse City.
