TRAVERSE CITY — Brian Kevin Drake, 56, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 9, 2010. His health had been challenged by the effects of diabetes. Brian was born on April 30, 1954, to Mary and Walter Drake of Birmingham. He graduated from W.E. Groves H.S., Beverly Hills, Mich., and attended Western Michigan University and Graceland University, where he won an NAIA national championship in men's volleyball. Golf was one of his sports passions. As an accomplished hole-in-one golfer, he could be found on Tuesday evenings with the men's league at Elmbrook. Classic and other cars were another interest. He worked in the insurance, hospitality, and moving and storage industries. Identifying emerging, efficient processes in business and pride in a job well done were important to him. He had an interest in government and politics. Brian is survived by his brothers, Erick (Anne) Drake and Tim (Jill) Drake; sister, Penelope Drake (Charles) Curry; cousins; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Drake; and infant sister, Jennifer. Services for Brian will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice in Brian's name.
