Bruce Gordon Kuiken, 84, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Born in Holland, Michigan, he was the fifth child of Neal and Jeanette Kuiken. He grew up with strong values of faith, family, and hard work that guided him throughout his life.
Bruce graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and went on to earn a Master's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan. He spent the majority of his professional career with Dow Chemical, later joining Quantum Chemical, and concluded his working life with the American Plastics Council in Washington, D.C. Bruce deeply valued his work, the colleagues he collaborated with, and the many places his career allowed him to experience.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maurine Haas Kuiken; his daughter, Kathy (Kevin) Rakers; his son, David (Lynda) Kuiken; his grandsons, Colin, Flynn, and Roan; his sister, Betty (Paul) Essenburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 of his siblings. His family was his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment.
Bruce lived life to the fullest, known for his positive attitude, resilience, and genuine kindness. His Christian faith was an important part of his life and shaped the way he loved and served others.
A lifelong lover of music, Bruce played the trumpet and sang in his church choir. In his earlier years he was an avid runner and remained committed to staying active. He enjoyed hunting, the outdoors, fine wine, good cigars, and time spent with friends and family.
Bruce will be remembered for his warmth, enthusiasm, and unwavering love for those around him. A celebration of life will be held this summer.
