Obituary

Buelalee Gumper, 90, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Munson Hospice House with her loving family at her side.

She was born on April 18, 1933 in Mancelona, MI to the late Buel and Leila (Fox) Porter. She married the late Myron D. Gumper (twice) the first time in 1963 and the second time on April 15, 1981. Together they lovingly raised seven wonderful children, Gary, Susan, David, Elaine , Judy, Jean and Paul.
Buelalee's caring spirit extended beyond her family as she earned the title of the neighborhood mom, known for generously providing meals and her handmade desserts to the little neighborhood children. She was a dedicated member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, the Cherryland Blue Jays Camping Club, the Pine Needlers Quilting Club and Our Brothers Keepers. Buelalee held many presidential offices in several of these clubs and was happy to give her time and talents. And nearly everyone has at least one of her Rag Rugs.

Her passion for quilting was evident in her gifted creations, including sweaters and preemie hats. Buelalee selflessly donated her time, energy, and fabric to various causes, contributing to caps for cancer and so many other wonderful charities. In her spare time, she found joy in leading and being in charge, leaving a lasting impact on the communities she served.

Survived by her children, Susan Messner, David (Christine) NaDell, Elaine Hale, Jean (Greg) Elliot, Paul (Elspeth) Gumper, 12 grandchildren, many great and great-great-grandchildren, and numerous other loving family members and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Myron, Siblings John Porter, Carolyn Achtenberg, son Gary, daughter Judy and son in laws Mike Hale and Duane Messner.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 4-7pm at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, at 11am with a visitation held one hour prior also at the Funeral Home.
