Obituary

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell for now to a cherished husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, Carl Leroy Johnson, 88, of Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City, MI. Carl passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, with loved ones by his side, on June 14, 2024.

Carl lived a very full life. He was born to Norwegian immigrant parents, Gerda Sophia Leroy and Carl Joseph Johnson in Chicago, Illinois, September 2, 1935. When Carl was a young boy, he boarded the "R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth" with his mother, Gerda, to reconnect with his Norwegian heritage on the island of Leroy. He had fond memories of his experiences there on the family farm learning the Norwegian language and culture.

Carl and his mother returned to the United States a few years later where, along with new stepfather Claude Cook, took up their own farm in Bloomingdale, MI. Carl learned his exceptional outdoorsman skills and much to contribute to his good moral character from Claude Cook. Carl went on to attend Western Michigan University and the ROTC program. Carl met his sweetheart Evelyn Johnson at college and they were married May 3, 1958 just before heading off to army life.

The newlyweds moved to Garmisch, Germany where Carl served in the US Army as First Lieutenant. Lt. Johnson and his rifle team competed in shooting competitions throughout Europe. The Army noticed Carl's leadership skills and offered him a position as an instructor for a new sharpshooting program. Instead, Carl was eager to settle down with Evelyn and their newborn son, Erik Johnson. The family moved to Grand Ledge, MI to work for General Motors. Carl had a long and successful career at GM's Lansing plant, beginning on the "bumper line" and eventually becoming Engine Plant Assistant Superintendent. While living in Grand Ledge, his daughters, Kristine and Colleen were born.

Carl was a true outdoorsman. He took many trophies during a lifetime of deer hunting. Carl even handbuilt his own "A" frame cottage up north. He was an avid boater and loved fishing and sailing. Carl and his family traveled near and far together. Together, Carl and Evelyn visited all 7 continents. His favorite adventures included tours of Europe, Antarctica and Arctic Circle, beaches of Bora Bora, walking the Great Wall of China, Russia, and sailing and diving in the Bahamas. He also visited all 50 states, the Upper Peninsula's wild beauty being his favorite. Carl's adventurous spirit has encouraged his family to continue exploring the world.

Carl was very proud of his family and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn, and their children, Erik, Kristine and her husband, Larry Denny, and Colleen and her husband, Chris Fowler. In their retirement on Old Mission Peninsula, many beloved grandkids and great grandkids came along. Carl is survived by: Roxanne, Sydney, Joseph, Kyle, Jasen, Patrick, Max, Erika, Nick, Elias, Carly and Joy. Next came his great grandkids: Henrik, Arthur, Payton, Elliett, Evelyn, Leo, Eli, Lincoln, and Christopher.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gerda Cook, his father, Carl J. Johnson, and his stepfather, Claude Cook.

Though Carl may no longer walk beside us on Earth, his spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear. He had a strong faith and looked upon his passing as a celebration to be called home to Christ in heaven. His legacy of wisdom, rectitude, courage, story telling, enthusiasm and generosity will continue to inspire us all. We will end just as Carl usually left a gathering, singing, "We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll meet again some sunny day."

On June 24, 2024 a memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City, MI. The viewing begins at 12pm, followed by a service at 1 pm and celebration of life afterwards. Carl has specifically requested "lots of flowers," in lieu of other memorial services. Following the service a luncheon will be held in the Northside room at the church. All are invited to stay, share memories and enjoy refreshments together.

The family would also ask that if you feel called to, consider sharing a short story or favorite memory of Carl, either in writing or video to save for posterity. You can email them to fowlerfarm1@gmail.com .

Interment will follow at Peninsula Township Cemetery where he will receive full military honors.
