BUCKLEY- Carl Paige Johnson, a progressive, compassionate liberal who was tolerant of everything except intolerance, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, after a debilitating illness. He was born in Flint on December 26, 1940 to the late Eugene and Nila (Ashley) Johnson. He was 75 years of age. Carl was a man of many interests and talents. He loved playing games of all kinds with his children and was a very good poker player. He was an artist who painted signs and murals in addition to pictures. Carl volunteered at the Art Center in Traverse City as well as at Buckley Elementary School. He was a woodcarver, a builder and loved accumulating tools. Carl played guitar and piano almost daily when younger and he loved music of all kinds. He liked to cook and enjoyed eating a good vegetarian meal anywhere. He loved to bowl, play golf and was a fast pitch softball pitcher in his youth. Carl was a stay-at-home dad and great father who loved his children dearly. He was a patient, gentle and honest man. He quit high school three times and then went on to graduate from Flint Northern High School in 1960 and earned a Bachelor of Science from MSU in 1971. Carl married Nancy Jones in 1975 after a 17 day courtship, they lived in Colorado for several years where both their children were born. They moved to Buckley in 1981.
Carl is survived by his wife, Nancy and children Jessica Johnson and Jeremiah (Lora) Johnson and his beloved grandchildren; Esme and Travis Johnson, all of Buckley. He is also survived by his brother, Gary (Brenda) Johnson of Flint and nieces; Holly and Jessica.
In accordance with Carl's wishes cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorials in Carl's name may be made to the ACLU, Amnesty International or Doctors without Borders.
