Obituary

EMPIRE — Carol Edith (Siebert) Lund, 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at home, after an extended illness. She presumably died of heart failure and pulmonary fibrosis, which resulted from radiation therapy associated with her fight against Hodgkin's disease in 1974, a fight from which she prevailed; the results of which provided her family and friends with 36 additional years of her kindness and generosity.Carol was born June 14, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., the only child of the late Fred and Hazel (Burrows) Siebert. Mrs. Hazel Siebert's family originally settled in Kasson Township in the 1860s, and are descendants of the Atkinson family of Empire. Carol was a proud fifth generation resident of the Empire and Glen Lake area and was always a resident in spirit when she resided elsewhere during her life. Colonel Fred Siebert, her father, was a career Army Air Force officer, and as a result Carol resided in many different locations throughout both the United States and Canada during her youth. She met her future husband, John Lund, at the University of Michigan in 1957, where she was active in the Kappa Delta sorority. Carol married John Sept. 5, 1959, after which she worked to help support their family through his extended schooling. Determined to earn her own degree, Carol worked tirelessly for several years while raising and maintaining a family, and ultimately graduated from Western Michigan University in 1980 with a degree in music. John, Carol and their two children, Mark and Anne, lived in East Lansing, Pullman, Wash., Menlo Park, Calif., Lafayette, Ind., Richland, Wash., Kalamazoo, and finally on Little Glen Lake, the location she had always considered home throughout her years.Carol taught piano for many years and was beloved by her students. She was active with The Eastern Star in Kalamazoo, Empire and Traverse City. Carol was the Worthy Matron twice in Corinthian Chapter in Kalamazoo, as well as appointed Grand Organist in 1990.Carol is survived by her husband, John; son, Mark (Barb Reynolds) Lund; daughter, Anne (Phil) Boone; three grandchildren, Christine, Mallory and Allen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will take place today from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Carol was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah, the location of her funeral service this Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a committal at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, the Alzheimer's Association or the Disabled Veterans of America.
