Traverse City - Carol Doris Shaffer, 92, of Traverse City passed away March 14, 2015, at Tendercare in Traverse City.
Carol was born on February 20, 1923, in Monroe Center to the late William F. and Inez E. (Bosshard) Crain. She was adopted by Claude Nelson who raised her.
In 1946 Carol married David G. Shaffer who preceded her in death in 1981.
Carol was a member of the First Congregational Church and served on the board at the Church Thrift Shop. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 147 and former member of the Rainbow Girls. Carol worked for JCPenney as a sales associate. When she wasn't working, she enjoyed volunteering with R.S.V.P (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). In her spare time she liked to tend to her flower garden, play tennis and go dancing at the Senior Center.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband David, sister Marval Ault and brothers Lewis (Phyllis)Nelson and Dale (Ann) Nelson.
Carol is survived by her sons, Timothy (Rosile) Shaffer of Williamsburg and Robert "Doc" (Beverly) Shaffer of Grawn; grandchildren, Todd (Karen) Shaffer, Bill Shaffer, Adam (Brooke) Shaffer, and Eric (Kelley) McLean; four great grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The Eastern Star will lead their service at 7 p.m.; all are welcome to come and participate.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Order of the Eastern Star 147.
