Obituary

NORTH CAROLINA - Charles R. Meyer, age 89, of Traverse City, MI passed away Monday, November 7, 2016 at the Camden Place Assisted Living Facility in Greensboro, NC, in the loving care of his family.
Charles R. Meyer Jr. was born on April 23, 1927 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the son of Charles R. Meyer and Susann Taylor Meyer. He attended school there and after graduating from high school, he served in the United States Army in Germany.
He and Julianne E. Myer were married in New Philadelphia on December 27, 1950, and in 1951 he received a B.A. degree from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. They moved to the Washington, D.C. area where Mrs. Meyer taught school and where Mr. Meyer studied for an M.A. degree from the School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University. They then spent two years in Quito, Ecuador, where they both taught at the American School of Quito.
Shortly after they returned to the United States, Mr. Meyer entered the U.S. Foreign Service and subsequently, was posted to United States embassies in South Vietnam, Colombia, the Republic of Panama, Honduras, Argentina, and Spain. He also had several assignments at the United States Information Agency and the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C.
After he retired from the Foreign Service, the Meyers settled in Old Mission, Michigan where they both were active in community activities. Mr. Meyer also worked as a Realtor with several real estate companies in Traverse City. He was a member of the Old Mission Congregational Church, the American Legion, the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, and the American Foreign Service Association.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Susan Thompson, Oak Island, NC, daughter-in-law, Leah Meyer, Traverse City, MI, and grandchildren; Danielle Harvey, Amanda Harvey, and Owen Meyer, all of Traverse City, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Charles R Meyer III, sister "Nan" Ferguson, and son-in-law Steven Thompson.
A memorial service for Charles will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the Old Mission Congregational Church, at 1:00 pm.
